THE COLOR OF EMPTINESS

Choi Rye earned her PhD in Art Theory from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where she studied printmaking. She has since developed a practice grounded in traditional water-based woodblock printing and the formal language of East Asian painting.

Choi works by inking a round woodblock and pressing it onto paper. She lets it dry, then prints again — a process repeated dozens of times before a single circle is complete. Because the technique is entirely manual, with no mechanical intervention, the grain of the woodblock and the accumulated layers of pigment remain visible on the surface. No two prints can be made identically, so every finished work exists as a single, unique print.

Her paintings began with figurative, portrait-based compositions. These gave way to fields of countless individual points, which have since condensed into one or two circles per canvas. As the point count diminishes and the form simplifies, the work turns its attention instead to the density of color, the layering of tone, and the relationships between circles. In the space left by reduced form, subtle shifts in color, surface, and negative space come into sharper focus.

From complete circles to severed ones, from single forms to dozens layered together, Choi treats the circle as a single motif in constant variation. But the circle alone is not the point. The negative space that opens where circles overlap, touch, or drift apart is equally part of the work. For Choi, this space is not empty — it is where different forms and colors enter into relation, and where the viewer's own experience takes hold.

Through repeated printing, layering, and fading, no form ever settles into a finished state. A pale color is overlaid with a darker one; where they meet, the boundary softens and gives way to a third color. The color on the surface is never a fixed outcome but an ongoing process of layering, lightening, and building up again. For Choi, this is close to what 空 (emptiness) means — not a form that holds still, but one that continues to take on new appearances through the act of printing, layering, and the relationships that emerge on the surface.
