GEOFFREY BOUILLOT

Geoffrey Bouillot (b. 1990, Chalon-sur-Saône, France) is a contemporary artist based in Tokyo whose practice merges the structural rigor of the French avant-garde with the clarity and restraint of Japanese visual culture. Through a process of deconstructing and reconstructing forms, Bouillot develops an original pictorial language that redefines the relationship between figure, object, and space, exploring the threshold where mechanical order meets human sensibility.

His paintings are characterized by modular shapes, precisely segmented gradients, and smooth surfaces that appear industrial at first glance, yet are meticulously rendered by hand. This duality—between the mechanically perfect and the unmistakably human—forms the core of Bouillot’s visual identity. While the compositions may seem cool and controlled, subtle cues in posture, gesture, and gaze reveal an undercurrent of emotional presence, giving his structured forms an unexpectedly intimate dimension.

Living and working in Tokyo since 2011, Bouillot draws from a wide range of influences, including Cubist fragmentation, Japanese minimalism, and the rhythm of contemporary image culture. Repetition, pattern, and spatial order function as central elements in his practice, reflecting his belief that painting is not only a vehicle for narrative or emotion, but also a system of balance, discipline, and material logic.

Bouillot’s works have been exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Seoul, and are included in notable institutional and private collections such as the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art (China) and the Mangroves Foundation (Spain). His paintings have also been featured in major auctions including Sotheby’s and Phillips, affirming his growing presence in the global contemporary art market.

Through his exploration of structure and subtle human resonance, Bouillot proposes a distinct vision of contemporary painting—one in which clarity and uncertainty, order and vibration, coexist within a single, cohesive visual world.
