J.PARK (Jongkyu Park)

Jongkyu Park (b. 1966, Daegu) has spent more than three decades asking a question that most people never think to ask: what happens when you look closely at the noise?

In digital systems, noise is treated as a problem — the pixel glitches, signal errors, and fragmented data that appear when technology fails. Park does the opposite. He collects these moments of apparent failure, enlarges them, and reconstructs them by hand on canvas. What emerges is not chaos, but a hidden visual order that was there all along.

The process is painstaking. Each work is built through repeated cycles of layering, masking, printing, and removal — translating the logic of digital systems into physical surfaces that carry genuine depth and texture. Standing in front of a Park painting, viewers often find themselves shifting between two experiences: the precision of a digital grid, and the warmth of something unmistakably made by hand.

In recent years, Park's investigation has expanded into the Vertical Time series. Drawing on philosopher Gaston Bachelard's idea that time accumulates rather than simply passes, these works propose that a single canvas can hold past, present, and future at once. Layers of colour and repeating rhythms become a visual record of time experienced not as a line, but as depth.

Park studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He has presented solo exhibitions at Hakgojae Gallery, Gana Art, and Daegu Art Museum, and was selected for the Focus Section of The Armory Show, New York (2018) and the Insight Section of Art Basel Hong Kong (2017). In 2025, he held a major solo exhibition at Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou. In 2026, he was invited as Guest of Honor at Art Düsseldorf. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, Daegu Art Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, and institutions internationally.
