제프리 부이요(Geoffrey Bouillot)는 프랑스 출신으로 도쿄를 기반으로 활동하며, 고전 회화에서 발전해 온 화면 구성의 논리와 현대적인 시각 문화를 결합해 온 작가다. 그의 작품은 인물과 사물을 분절하고 재조합하는 구성, 매끈한 표면과 절제된 색감을 통해 차분하고 정제된 화면을 형성해 왔다.

《Chrome Memory》는 이러한 작업 흐름 속에서 선보이는 최신 회화 연작으로, 한국에서 열리는 부이요의 개인전이다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 모네, 마네, 다빈치, 고갱 등 서양 회화사 속 작품들을 출발점으로 삼되, 특정 장면을 그대로 재현하기보다 화면의 구도와 인물 배치, 명암과 형태의 관계를 중심으로 작업을 전개한다. 익숙한 이미지는 실루엣, 빛과 그림자의 구조로 단순화되며, 회화적 구성의 문제로 다시 다뤄진다.

전시 제목에 사용된 ‘Chrome’은 이번 시리즈에서 두드러지는 화면 조건을 가리킨다. 금속을 연상시키는 단색의 화면과 매끈한 표면

은 형태와 구조에 자연스럽게 시선을 머물게 하며, 색과 형상은 최소한의 요소로 남아 화면의 균형을 이룬다. 디지털 이미지처럼 보이는 작품들은 모두 작가의 손으로 완성된 회화로, 가까이에서 볼수록 미세한 붓질과 화면의 밀도가 드러난다.

부이요는 Sotheby’s와 Phillips 등 주요 국제 경매에 작품을 출품했으며, KIAF를 비롯한 국제 아트페어와 런던의 Stolen Space, 일본의 YOD Gallery 등 아시아와 유럽의 갤러리를 통해 작품을 선보여 왔다. 최근에는 런던의 MADDOX Gallery에서 2024년 4월 ‘이달의 작가’로 선정되며 국제적인 주목을 받았다.

《Chrome Memory》는 부이요가 지속적으로 탐구해 온 회화의 구성 방식과 화면 감각이 응축된 전시로, 고전 회화의 유산이 동시대 회화 안에서 어떻게 재구성될 수 있는지를 차분하게 보여준다.

작가 Manifesto

예술사와 대화한다는 것은 영묘(Mausoleum)를 방문하는 일이 아니다. 그것은 가시적인 세계의 구조 그 자체를 만지는 일이다.

이 시리즈에서 나는 인용하지 않는다. 오직 추출할 뿐이다. 모네의 진동, 다 빈치의 스푸마토, 고갱의 틀—나는 그 정수만을 채굴하여 나의 어휘인 '절대적 형태' 속으로 융합시킨다.

인상주의가 찰나의 순간을 포착하려 했다면, 나의 작업은 영속하는 순간을 포착한다. 나는 이 장면들을 화석화한 것이 아니라 변성(Transmute)시켰다. 나의 붓 아래서 수련은 더 이상 시들지 않으며, 모나리자의 미소는 건축이 되고, 삶의 장면들은 침묵하는 토템으로 변모한다.

단색조와 금속성 처리를 선택한 것은 미학적 취향이 아니다. 그것은 윤리적 선택이다. 오직 본질적인 것, 즉 빛과 그림자, 그리고 양감만을 남기기 위함이다.

이것은 과거를 돌아보는 것이 아니다. 이것은 미래의 기억이다.

Geoffrey Bouillot is a French-born artist based in Tokyo whose practice brings together compositional principles developed in classical painting with contemporary visual culture. His work is characterized by the fragmentation and reassembly of figures and objects, as well as by smooth surfaces and restrained color palettes that result in calm, precisely structured compositions.

Chrome Memory is a new body of paintings presented as Bouillot’s solo exhibition in Korea. In this series, the artist takes works from Western art history—by figures such as Monet, Manet, Leonardo da Vinci, and Gauguin—as points of departure. Rather than reproducing specific scenes, he focuses on pictorial structure, including compositional balance, the placement of figures, and the relationships between light, shadow, and form. Familiar images are reduced to silhouettes and structural contrasts, re-examined through the lens of painterly construction.

The term “Chrome” in the exhibition title refers to the distinctive surface qualities of this series. Monochromatic fields that evoke metal, combined with smooth finishes, naturally guide the viewer’s attention toward form and structure. Color and shape are reduced to essential elements, creating a measured equilibrium within the frame. Although the works may initially resemble digital images, each painting is entirely hand-executed; on closer inspection, subtle brushwork and the density of the painted surface become apparent.

Bouillot has presented his work through major international auction houses including Sotheby’s and Phillips, and has participated in international art fairs such as KIAF. His work has also been shown at galleries in Asia and Europe, including Stolen Space in London and YOD Gallery in Japan. In April 2024, he was selected as Artist of the Month by MADDOX Gallery in London, further solidifying his international profile.

Chrome Memory brings together Bouillot’s ongoing investigation into pictorial structure and surface sensibility, offering a measured view of how the legacy of classical painting can be reconfigured within contemporary painting.
